Beyond the Ribbon: Why I’m Now Sharing a List of Gifts I Actually Want (And You Should Too)

Hello Beautiful Souls,

If you’ve been here before, you know I believe that gift-giving is a language of love. In my previous post, The Art of Gifting: How Intentional Wrapping Turns Presents Into Thoughtful Treasures, we talked about how the wrap – the textures, the ribbons, the quiet pause before opening – turns a present into an experience. That intentionality is the heart of giving.

But a question lingers: What if you pour your soul into wrapping a box... only to realize the gift inside misses the mark?

We’ve all been there. Staring at a blank wall, trying to guess what our friend, husband, mother or sister would truly love. We buy something we think is cool... or something we hope they’ll like... or, let’s be honest, there comes a point we give up and try to give cash instead. And while money is practical, it can feel so impersonal. It doesn’t whisper, “I appreciate you and I see you”.

A few years ago, my sister Rima solved this dilemma with an idea so simple, so amazing, that it’s changed everything for our family and gift giving.

The Simple Yet Amazing Idea from My Sister, Rima

We all know wedding and baby shower registries exist. But Rima used this idea for birthdays. Every year, weeks before her birthday, she would send us a list. Not vague ideas - but a list of clear, various gift ideas she genuinely needs, will use and will love. She includes different price ranges, product names, and even pictures.

Does this spoil the "surprise"? Not at all. What it removes (for me definitely) is the anxiety. We don't have to guess. We can rest easy knowing that the money we spend and every ribbon we tie is on something that will be treasured, not regifted or forgotten.

Think about it. If you don't truly know your friend, husband, wife, mother or sister... you are just lost. You may buy a gift that you think they will like. But will they? Or do you actually like it, and not them? And giving money? It's just so impersonal.

So, this month, I decided to follow her lead... and take it one step further.

My "Gift List" - An Intentional Guide for Your Loved Ones

I wanted to make it not just easy for my family, but also to stay true to the intentional, thoughtful aesthetic we love. So, I opened my favorite tool, Canva and created a document/PDF.

Here is exactly what I did, and you can do the same for any occasion: birthdays, housewarming, baby shower, bridal shower, anniversary - without needing a formal registry.

Step 1: Start with Gracious Thanks

I opened with a short, heartfelt message: "Thank you so much for thinking of me. If you are interested in choosing a gift for this occasion, here is a list of things I would truly love and use." This sets a tone of gratitude, not expectation.

Step 2: List Gifts by Price Range

I organized items so there’s something for every budget - a small candle, a beautiful notebook, a mid-range piece of jewelry, or a "group gift" item.

Step 3: Add a Picture & Name

For each item, I removed the background of the product photo (using Canva’s tools) and placed it next to the name of the item.

Step 4: Link Directly to the Webpage

Here’s my favorite step. I hyperlinked the photo (or the text) directly to the product’s webpage. That way, when I save it as a PDF (which keeps the links live), they simply click the picture and it takes them right to the item. No searching, no typos, no “Is this the right shade?”

Step 5: Save & Send

Save as a PDF for clickable links (perfect for email or messaging). If you want a simple visual list, save as a PNG. Then share it with your loved ones a few weeks before your birthday, anniversary, housewarming, or even bridal shower - no formal registry needed.

Why This Isn’t "Spoiled" (It’s Liberating)

At first, some might worry this feels like a "demand list". But it’s the opposite. Think about it:

For the giver: You save time, money and stress. You win. You buy with confidence.

For the receiver: You receive something you will actually use and love. No returns, no clutter. You win.

For the relationship: You remove the hidden disappointment and replace it with genuine joy. That’s the ultimate act of care.

Giving money is easy. This is intentional. And it pairs perfectly with the art of wrapping. Imagine taking an item from this list, buying it, and then wrapping it with the velvet ribbons, dried cedar, and beautiful tags we talked about last time. Now that is a gift that says, "I see you, I hear you, and I took the time".

Your Turn: Let’s Redefine Gift-Giving Together

I’d love for this to become a conversation, not just a post. So, tell me:

Would you feel comfortable creating a "Gift List" for your own birthday? Why or why not?

Share your thoughts in the comments below. Let’s inspire each other to give more meaningfully - from the thought behind the item to the ribbon on top.

Here’s to less guessing and more genuine gratitude.

Love Always,

Sarina xxx
