Hello Beautiful Souls!

We were sold a dream. Yes!

Go to school. Get good grades. Get a stable 9-5 job. Work hard. Climb the ladder. Retire.

We all call this "the safe path". But when we look around. We see exhausted faces on the morning travel. We look at the parents watching their kids grow up through a phone screen. Look at the burnout, the high blood pressure, the anxiety, and the divorce rates.

Is this really safety? Or is it just a slow-motion robbery?

Welcome to the reality of the 9-5 Scam.

The Trade We Didn’t Know We Were Making

Every morning, we wake up and sell the most valuable asset we own. It isn't our labor. It's our time .

In exchange for our salary, we hand over 8-10 hours of our day.

But here's where the scam gets sneaky. That phrase "9-5"? In most work chats and employment contracts, it doesn't mean 9 am to 5 pm. It means 9 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Think about it. 9 am to 6 pm. Or 8 am to 5 pm. That "unpaid lunch hour" is the quietest theft in modern work. We're contracted for 45 hours, not 40. Add the commute, going and coming back. Add the "just quickly check this" at 6:15pm. Suddenly, 9 hours becomes 10. And 45 hours becomes 50.

We agreed to "9 to 5". They gave us 9 hours, 5 days. Same letters. Different math. And we're the ones who feel crazy for being tired.

Add the commute, the "wind-down" time after work, and the Monday blues. Suddenly, we have given 70% of our waking life to a company that would replace us in a week if we dropped dead.

We are chasing wealth - but we are spending our health. We are chasing stability - but we are sacrificing our family. We are chasing money – but we are losing our leisure.

Is a bigger paycheck worth missing our child's first steps? Is a corner office worth missing our best friend's wedding? The math ain't mathing as they say (lol).

The Geography of Burnout: Europe vs. The Rest

I don’t think it has to be this way. In fact, in many parts of the world, the 9-5 scam doesn't exist because they refuse to play the game.

Take Italy for instance. In the afternoon, they close their shops. People go home. They eat lunch with their families. They take a nap. Nobody apologizes for it. In Germany and Spain, workers have legally protected rights to disconnect after 6 PM. In France, it is illegal to email employees after hours.

These countries understand a simple truth: Humans are human beings, not human doings.

They work to live. They prioritize leisure, social responsibility and mental health. And guess what? Their economies haven't collapsed. They just have happier, healthier citizens.

Then There is the "Grind" Culture

Elsewhere - specifically in the US, parts of Asia, and the gig economy - we have normalized the opposite.

50-hour weeks? That’s "standard". Skipping our lunch break? That’s "dedication". Working while we are sick? That’s "team spirit". Vacation? You mean "checking emails from the beach".

And let's not forget: that "9 - 5" we thought was 40 hours? It's 45. Every single week. That's an extra month of labor per year – unpaid, un-thanked, and largely unnoticed.

We have created a culture where overwork is a badge of honor. But here is the cruelest joke of all: After all that sacrifice, your job is not secure .

You can give 12-hour days for a decade, and one quarterly earnings report later, you are laid off via a Zoom or Teams call (we are all seeing this happen in the news and companies). You traded your life for a company that sees you as a line item on a spreadsheet. That isn't stability. That is indentured servitude with a retirement savings plan.

The "Unemployment Sword" Hanging Over You

The irony of the 9-5 scam is that we accept the misery because we fear the alternative. "At least I have a steady paycheck", we tell ourselves.

But do you? Do we?

In this modern economy, "permanent" jobs are disappearing. At-will employment means you can be fired for any reason. Automation is coming. Outsourcing is constantly going on.

The contract between worker and employer was broken decades ago, but nobody told the worker.

We are sacrificing our health and happiness for the illusion of security.

Escaping the Trap

So, what is our solution? Quitting our job tomorrow to live in a car is not practical for everyone. But recognizing the scam is the first step to reclaiming our lives.

Here is how we stop being victims of the 9-5:

Redefine "Enough". Why do you need a 20% raise? Will that buy back your time? Usually, it buys us more stuff we don't have time to enjoy. Stop chasing infinite wealth; chase enough wealth.

Set European Boundaries. Just because our local culture doesn't mandate work-life balance doesn't mean you can't enforce it. Stop answering emails at 6 PM. Take your lunch break away from your desk. You will be surprised how little the world ends.

Build a "Bridge". The best way to beat the insecurity of the 9-5 is to build a side skill. A freelance client. A small online business. You don't need to replace your income overnight; you just need to know that if the job disappears, you won't.

Guard Your Leisure like Gold. Schedule family time. Block out "Do Not Disturb" hours. If you don't protect your time, your boss will steal it.

The Bottom Line

The 9-5 isn't evil. But the scam is believing that sacrificing your entire life for a paycheck is the only way to be responsible.

You are not lazy for wanting to see your family. You are not unambitious for wanting to take a nap. You are not a failure for wanting to enjoy the one life you actually have.

Stop trading time for money you won't live long enough to enjoy. Start trading time for memories, health and peace.

Because in the end, nobody on their deathbed ever said, "I wish I had spent more time in spreadsheets". LOL

What do you think? Are you feeling the 9-5 scam today, or have you found a way out? Let me know in the comments.

Love Always,

Sarina xx
