Learning to Walk with Faith and What It Taught Me About Fear

Hello Beautiful Souls,
Lately, with everything that has been going on in our world, I've been thinking about fear and how faith can seem to disappear sometimes. And I couldn't help but notice that there’s a beautiful parallel between a baby learning to walk and the biblical story of Peter walking on water towards Jesus. Both moments capture the tension between faith and fear, trust and doubt - and the importance of keeping our focus on the One who guides us.
You know that moment when a baby is learning to walk? They cling to their parents’ fingers, taking those first wobbly steps, trusting completely that Mom or Dad won’t let them fall. But then, something shifts - maybe they look down at the floor or realize no one is holding them anymore - and in that split second of doubt, they lose balance and tumble.
It’s not failure. It’s just part of the process. The parents don’t scold them. They pick them up, steady them and say, “Try again '. And slowly, with enough encouragement, the baby stops fearing the fall and starts walking.
It makes me think of Peter in the Bible - the way he stepped out of the boat onto the water when Jesus called him. As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he was doing the impossible. But the moment he noticed the wind and waves, fear took over and he sank.
Isn’t that how we are, too?
We start out brave, full of faith, ready to move forward - until we remember how deep the water is, how far the ground seems below us, how many things could go wrong. And just like that, we falter.
But here’s the beautiful thing: Jesus didn’t let Peter drown. He reached for him immediately. And just like a parent teaching their child to walk, He didn’t shame him for the stumble. He just asked, ' Why did you doubt? '
Maybe faith isn’t about never being afraid. Maybe it’s about looking past the fear - past the waves, past the wobbly and shaky legs - and fixing our eyes on the One who calls us forward.
I don’t know what 'walking on water ' looks like for anyone. Maybe it’s learning a new skill, stepping into a God-given calling, starting a new job, taking a leap of obedience, enduring a season of waiting, finding the courage to keep going when everything feels unstable or facing a storm in life. Whatever it is, we all waver when fear takes over. But if you’ve felt yourself sinking lately, remember: just like a loving parent or Jesus reaching for Peter, God is there to lift us up and say, “Try again. Keep going. Trust Me."
So, take the step. Try again. And when the fear creeps in, listen for the voice that says, “I’ve got you ' . Have faith, because you were never meant to walk alone.
The next time you feel afraid to take a step, remember: Faith isn’t the absence of fear - it’s moving forward despite it.
Have you ever felt like the baby learning to walk or Peter on the water? How did God help you through it? What are your thoughts on Faith & Fear? Share in the comments!
Love Always,
Sarina xx
