From Dull to Dewy: 3 Nourishing Winter Face Masks

Hello Beautiful Souls,

You know that feeling winter brings? The crisp air, quiet, chilly mornings, wrapping yourself in a sweater, … it really has its own kind of magic. It’s the perfect time to cozy up with a cup of something warm.

But if I'm being totally honest? While you’re sipping that hot chocolate, your skin is probably sending out a very different, much less cozy memo.

See, the winter air steals moisture from your skin outside, while indoor heating dries it out even further. This weakens our skin’s natural barrier, leaving it dry and irritated.

The good news ? You don't need a fancy spa day or a medicine cabinet stocked with a hundred products to fix it. Some of the best ingredients for healing your skin are probably already sitting in your pantry or fridge.

So, in this guide, I want to share three simple DIY face masks I put together just for getting through winter. They’re made to really calm any irritation, plump your skin full of deep hydration, and help repair that all-important protective barrier. The goal is to get you back to feeling comfortable and glowing in your own skin, without even having to leave your house.

Pre-Mask Rituals:

  1. Wash your face gently by using lukewarm (not hot) water and a gentle cleanser.

  2. Boil water, pour into a bowl, and let your face steam over it for 2-3 minutes with a towel tented over your head. This opens pores a little and helps absorption without ruining your skin barrier. (Be careful of the hot steam, give it some time before you steam)

  3. Always do a patch test, a small amount of any new mixture on your arm first to check for reactions.

  4. Apply masks with your fingers or a brush. Relax for 10-20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat (never rub) dry.

  5. After you remove your mask and while skin is slightly damp, immediately apply a few drops of a facial oil (like jojoba) and/or your regular rich moisturizer to "seal" in the benefits.

From Dull to Dewy: 3 Nourishing Winter Face Masks

Mask 1: The Honey & Oat Mask

Best for: Redness, irritation, itchiness and a compromised skin barrier.

Recipe:

  • 1 Tbsp. Honey: A powerful moisturizer that draws moisture into the skin. It's naturally antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and packed with antioxidants to soothe and protect.

  • 1 Tbsp. Oatmeal: Ideal for soothing. It contains properties that calm itchiness and redness, and that help repair the skin's barrier and lock in moisture.

  • 1 Tsp. Plain Yogurt: Provides gentle lactic acid for very light exfoliation (removing flaky skin) and probiotics to support the skin's microbiome. The fat adds softness and smoothness.

Method & Application:

  1. Mix all ingredients in a small bowl until a smooth, spreadable paste forms.

  2. Apply a generous, even layer to clean, damp skin.

  3. Leave on for 15-20 minutes. The oats will form a comforting, protective film.

  4. Rinse gently with lukewarm water using circular motions - the oats will provide a very mild exfoliation as you rinse.

Mask 2: The Avocado & Banana Mask

Best for: Dried, dehydrated, flaky skin that lacks elasticity and "bounciness"

Recipe:

  • 2 Tbsp. Ripe Avocado: Rich in omega fatty acids and oleic acid, which acts like the skin's natural lipids to deeply nourish and reinforce the barrier. Packed with vitamins E (antioxidant) and C.

  • 1 Tbsp. Ripe Banana: A fantastic source of hydrating compounds. It's mild and helps soften and plump the skin.

  • 1 Tsp. Raw Honey: To bind the moisture into the skin (humectant).

  • Optional: 1 teaspoon of Aloe Vera Gel (for extra calming hydration) or Jojoba Oil.

Method & Application:

  1. In a bowl, mash and mix the avocado and banana until no large lumps remain.

  2. Stir in the honey (and optional ingredients if using) until creamy.

  3. Apply a thick layer to clean skin. The mask will be rich and decadent.

  4. Leave on for 15-20 minutes.

  5. Rinse thoroughly. You should feel an immediate improvement in skin softness and hydration.

Mask 3: The Pumpkin & Yogurt Mask

Best for: Dull, tired-looking winter skin with a buildup of dry, lifeless surface cells. It offers gentle enzymatic exfoliation without stripping your skin's natural oils.

Recipe:

  • 1 Tbsp. Pure Pumpkin Purée (canned, 100% pure): Contains natural fruit enzymes and a high concentration of vitamin A to gently dissolve dead skin cells, promote cell turnover, and reveal brighter skin. It's also rich in antioxidants.

  • 1 Tbsp. Plain Yogurt or Greek Yogurt: Adds lactic acid to boost the exfoliating effect and provides hydration.

  • 1/2 Tsp. Raw Honey: To prevent any potential drying from exfoliation and add soothing, hydrating properties.

  • Pinch of Ground Cinnamon (a tiny pinch - optional): A mild circulatory stimulant to bring blood flow to the surface for a healthy glow. Use with caution! Skip if you have rosacea or extremely sensitive skin.

Method & Application:

  1. Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a small bowl.

  2. Apply a thin, even layer to clean, dry skin. Avoid the eye area.

  3. Leave on for only 8-12 minutes. This is an active mask - do not leave it on for too long.

  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. You may feel a slight, harmless tingle.

  5. Follow immediately with your richest moisturizer or facial oil to replenish and soothe.

Other skincare information you need to know......

  • Use any of these masks 1-2 times per week. Listen to your skin. If it feels more sensitive, reduce it or stop.

  • Don't Forget - Your lips and the skin around your eyes need extra love. Use a lip balm and eye cream.

  • Get a humidifier in your bedroom at night. This is one of the best "treatments" for winter skin.

Give these masks a try and see how they work for you. And remember - being gentle and consistent with your skin is what really makes the difference for that winter glow.

If you do give one a try, I’d love to hear about it. Which one was your favorite? Did you tweak the recipe or have another cold-weather skin trick up your sleeve? Drop a comment below and share your thoughts.

Wishing you cozy, hydrated days ahead.

Love Always,

Sarina xx
